What is Fashion?
With Tom M'mangeniFashion is the accepted day to day way of dressing at a given time. If you see everyone wearing the same color or style when they have not been the trend before, such is "in-fashion."
Fashion is the total outlook of an individual of today and only for today.
Though fashion evolves and some styles come back, it only applies for "now". Even the retro fashion is never the same. Never has and never will.
Since every individual knows what she or he wants based on the influence of need and concern. Generally, right fashion means getting the value for your money. That's why the demand for designs that requires timeless appeal and a quality that goes beyond trendy has been tremendously increasing. Levi’s, Calvin Klein and even our own local Zakwathu fashion House, Mzika Wear and Khalidwe Wear are just a few to mention.
WHY DOES FASHION CHANGE?
Fashion change because people change. We always want something new. Clothing change for practicable reasons, for appropriateness for the season, and for adaptation to environment situation. In some cases the popularity of fashion endures for many seasons because of the combinations of these reasons. Take the blue jeans as an example.
Every time you change your clothes you are setting yourself up for a judgment by others. Going to the office in a sexy cocktail dress is not only impractical, it is confusing and inappropriate. People will be staring at you wondering what was wrong. Your image is incongruous with your clothing. Wear for the ambiance of the particular place. Every place we go, there is such thing as dress code, whether it is announced or unannounced.
TIP. The easiest way to invite confusion is to behave in a way that contradicts your clothing.

KINDS OF FASHION
Haute Couture - French word meaning high fashion. It means one-of-a-kind. These include designers' original designs or clothing that are custom made. |
Ready- to- wear (Prêt-a-Porte) - Term used to describe mass produced garments. These include designers' originals manufactured to a certain number for department stores and offered at lower prices. |
HOW DESIGNS WORK?
Designers create fashion which they think you will like. Advertising agencies and Fashion Magazines are only instruments to stimulate your imagination, but the bottom line depends upon your judgment on how you interpret those media messages to your particular need.
Knowing your body needs can help you make the right fashion choices. Be careful, however, most fashion mistakes happen when you choose garments because of the way they appear on models and/or friends.
In dealing with your particular style remember that the body is dependent to your personality just as any part of the body is dependent to the rest of your clothing.
The relationship of your personality, body and clothing must be in harmony as a whole for best result. People read clothing message only as a harmonious whole according to the standards we know.
The Five Factors that affect fashion
1. Geographical location. No matter how popular a fashion trend is in Paris may not be appropriate in a small and poor city in Africa.
2. The ethnic background. A popular trend in New York may not be a popular trend in Saudi Arabia even if both were designed by same designer.
3. Age background of the population. If there is unusually large population of older people, they may prefer conservative clothing in their community.
4. Social activities of the people. Is it farming or skiing?
5. Economic condition. Is it an affluent community, middle or poor community?
THE DESIGNER'S MIND
What makes one fashion look so good on one person and so bad on another is a product of a designer's mind.To understand fashion with clarity is to have knowledge of its construction. If you talk of construction, then there must be a tool to create the result just as an expert in any profession has. Fashion designers use fabrics but their tools are illusion, color, line, scale and form. Varying combinations of these tools determines what the design will look in various figures.
The designers never mix match these elements at random and just hope for the best. Every finish product is a carefully created pieces of art designed for a specific reason. Designers trained their eyes to pick what's good and what's bad. They observe and always aware of the trend to make them more knowledgeable of the various ways their tools can create and to get good value for their customers spending money.
