a letter from an afghan girl.

Afghan Woman With a Borga.

I was 12 years old when Taliban came to north of Afghanistan Sheberghan. I was at school with my sister Tania. We were in 7 grades. We had teachers day in Afghanistan. We had to bring gift for our teacher we was taking a big party for all the teacher but that day there was so little students and teachers were at school.

Left: Tania and Tamana at palm beach at the Lake Malawi
So we were about to start party. Suddenly our headmaster came and told all the teachers and students to go home as fast as you can. We could hear the fire guns and bombs. We all knew that it is Taliban, and they are very near to enter the city. My sister and me run home as fast as we could we left our bags and every thing at school. Thank God our house wasnʼt that far from school. When we arrived at home my mom was by the door crying and waiting for us. When she saw us, run and hold us in her hug and we all start crying. Because my mom thought she lost us and we thought that we are not going to make until home. Than we went in the house we had to take out of our walls all the beautiful posters and picture to burn them because Taliban were not allowing to have pictures on your wall, TV and toys for the kids because they were saying you warship the toys. So we had to burn all the pictures and the dolls and we had to hide somewhere our TV. Taliban was not allowing women to come out of their houses without a man or without a borqa.

When Taliban came my dad lost his job, so does my mom. My mom had a salon before Taliban, when they came she closed it because they werenʼt allowing women to come to salon.
Life was getting worse day by day. One day my mom sent Tania and me to buy some buttons from town.
Because when Taliban came she start sewing for people clothes.

So my sister and I went to town. There was a huge field in the center of the town, most the time boys was play football races and concerts. But today this field was looking like somewhere that I never seen it before there was so many Taliban cars and a huge hole in the centre of the field with a mountain of stones. In the other side of the field they build a wall. Suddenly every one was running some of them was going inside the field some people going running out of the field. My sister and me we got scared to death. Every where was storm of dust and smoke, I ask one of the women what is going on in here. She saidʼ Taliban is stoning a woman and under wall a man because they had affair with each other. Than a Talib came with his gun and shout at us to go inside the field. My sister I start crying. We went to the field than we run away from other side of the field. We run all the way home. Because we could not see such a thing we were scared to death. We came back home without any button or the things mom told us to bring her.
The next day we heard that they stoned the woman and under wall the man. They both died. We were so young but still we had to wear big scarf and long dress to cover from head to toes. We were hardly coming out of the house because Taliban was choosing girls for them selves. At night they were coming the girlʼs house asking her parents that they want their daughter. The parent didnʼt have that power to say no. because if they would say no to Taliban, they would kill all the family and marry with their daughters. The boys werenʼt allowed to have hair style they had to shave and were a small white hat. School was closed for the girls. Taliban was saying education is not for women they have stay at home, give birth and cook for their husband. The school was open only for boys but all the teachers were Taliban and they were teaching only Quran and pray all the time. Boys had to wear long dresses with turban.
Every day in the town a car full of Taliban with guns was driving and forcing people to go to mosque. Even though they were just coming out of the mosque, the Taliban would beat them and tell people to go to mosque because was saying we didnʼt see u praying. If the people were saying we just pray Taliban would take them and put them in the jail.
Every Mondays and Thursdays we had shopping day people was coming from villages to sell fruits or eggs and buys other thing to take back with them. But since Taliban came to Sheberghan, every Mondays and Thursdays they were hanging men and stoning women or beating them with no reasoning the centre of the town. They was forcing people to watch.
